Day Eight: The Ostrich Is NOT My Friend!

We woke up late, as usual. After an apple turn over breakfast at the condo, we took to the road to see the Natural Bridge Caverns. Our tour took us over 180 feet underground to see some wonderful rock formations. The stalagtites and stalagmites were absolutely beautiful. Some canyons in the ground exist, and seeing the different layers of rock underneath the surface proved interesting. When the rock was more dense, the tour guide said that there had been significant rainfall that year. As we walked through a naturally carved out walkway, we had to reflect on how awesome our Lord is. He's mighty in power to create such a place, and yet he has a tender heart to design and create extreme beauty.

Here's a link: Natural Bridge Caverns.

I think it's neat how the water drips down and the minerals remain.

This particular cavern went really far back, but it's difficult to see.

Jeff and Keegan beginning the adventure.

This was really pretty, too.

Mama took that photo.

This was a giant bridge over Grendel's lair. If you've read Beowulf, you would laugh right now. I guess some Literature majors first explored these caverns.

This was a giant room, and those tiers were at least three stories tall!

The lighting make the background look a little erie.

This was the giant jellyfish.

After our tour, we noticed that we were very close to the Wildlife Ranch that we wanted to visit on Friday. We grabbed some lunch at an authentic Tex-Mex fast food place (a lot like Taco Bell, but waaaaaaaaaaaay better). Then we decided to return to the Wildlife Ranch: An African Safari, Texan Style.

We proceeded to travel through this huge ranch in our car, after receiving a white paper bag full of animal snacks. The workers said to be careful because certain animals will reach right inside your vehicle expecting food. We entered the animal area, very excited.

There were many different types of animals, including buffalo, emu, mountain goats, zebras, ostriches, llamas, elk, deer, and many others. We drove the entire way through, seeing all sorts of animals. Jeff and Keegan were having a great time, since they are always animal watching when we drive anyway.

Here's the view of the back seat! (What a handsome boy!)

Seriously, I did not have to zoom in on most of these animals.

At a certain section, an ostrich saw us driving and started running toward our vehicle! (Those animals know when treats are available!) The ostrich was about 15 feet tall!! Let us not forget that it weighs about 2,000 lbs, and it's one of the ugliest birds I've ever seen. So this big, ugly bird is running towards us. We threw a few treats on the ground and rolled up our windows. Just as Keegan rolled up his window, the ostrich pecked at the window, trying to get its head in our vehicle.

Here's the ugly bugger now.

We had so much fun the first time that we decided to drive through again. We all switched seats, and I drove so Jeff could devote all of his attention to watching. Keegan sat in the front seat, and the second trip was very different from the first one.

At one point we saw some zebras. They slowly came up to the car, and we were really excited to see them up close.

Well...one of the zebras reached his entire head in Keegan's window. We were all a little startled, so I drove ahead slowly. The smart little zebra grabbed the white bag of animal treats right off of Keegan's lap! We were startled, excited, and laughing all at the same time. The zebra ate all of the treats and the bag, too! I'm just glad that he didn't get the camera, which happened to be sitting in Keegan's lap, too.

Yes, we were compassionate parents. We grabbed the camera to document the event instead of being concerned about our child's welfare.

The goats were shy enough for us to feel comfortable.

On our return to the condo, we decided to pick up some groceries to grill at the picnic area by the pool. Jeff stopped at a H.E.B. grocery store. It's like Meijer on steroids. We got only two eye of round steaks and three ears of corn, with some butter and spices. It was most delicious.

After supper, we swam in the dark in the pool. The inside of the pool was lit, and there were a few lamp lights around. It was kind'a neat.

Very cool...I love looking at God's creativity! I especially appreciated the Beowulf reference (most people probably think of Beowulf as that lame CG movie starring Angelina Jolie...but I'll never forget reading that book in English Lit!).
